Hiking is such an incredible activity. Not only do you get to spend time outdoors in nature, but hiking is also healthy exercise. Whether you prefer to hike alone or with a group, the South Bend area is home to several incredible parks and preserves where you can catch glimpses of everything from frogs to spruce trees. If you need a break from looking at South Bend homes for sale, we suggest hitting one of these trails.

  • Lydick Bog Nature Preserve: 25898 US Highway 20, South Bend, IN 46628-5620
    Lydick Bog Nature Preserve is a 178-acre nature preserve with a mixture of wetlands, forests, and mossy ravines. The main trail stretching through the preserve is 1.73 miles long, making it a good choice for an afternoon hike. Along the way, you'll pass several bogs and marshes.

    The woods at Lydick Bog Nature Preserve are full of old oak and maple trees. You'll also see countless frogs and birds. The trail, while it has some hills and elevation changes, is not overly technical to hike.

  • Potato Creek State Park: 25601 State Rd. 4, North Liberty, IN 46554
    Potato Creek State Park     is located just a few miles southwest of South Bend. It's a lovely state park with diverse wetlands, old fields, and mature forests. There are several hiking trails weaving through the park. For beginners, the Friends Wetlands Trail is a great choice. This 0.75-mile loop trail is relatively flat and has several observation decks.

    Another great trail to hike is Trail 1, which passes Worster Lake and traverses a few old fields before ending at the Nature Center. This trail is 2.2 miles long and rated "moderate."

  • Rum Village Park: 2626 S. Gertrude St., South Bend, IN 46614
    If you want to enjoy a hike without leaving city limits, head to Rum Village Park. This city park spans more than 160 acres, and it is mostly hilly woodlands. There are three miles of hiking trails winding through the park, and they're well-marked, so you don't have to worry about getting lost. Mountain bikers are welcome on most trails, too.

    Rum Village Park also has a dog park, playgrounds, and a disc golf course. So, you can stick around for more fun after your hike.

  • Spicer Lake Nature Preserve: 50840 County Line Rd., New Carlisle, IN 46552
    Just outside of South Bend, you'll find Spicer Lake Nature Preserve, a 320-acre nature preserve with a mixture of woodlands, wetlands, and meadows. There are several trails weaving through the preserve. The Old Field Trail will take you around an old, overgrown field. The Maple Woods Trail passes several majestic maple trees.

    Spicer Lake Nature Preserve has several boardwalks along its trails. There is also a nature center you can visit for up-to-date happenings and printed maps.

  • Chamberlain Lake Nature Preserve: 58111 Crumstown Highway, South Bend, IN 46619
    While there are several lovely hiking trails within the Chamberlain Lake Nature Preserve, the Chamberlain Lake Nature Preserve Loop is the most popular. This 1.3-mile loop trail offers a lovely view of the water. There are small hills but no overly difficult inclines. 

    This preserve is a great place for bird watching. You can expect to see water birds on the lake, especially during nice weather. Dogs are welcome on the trail so long as they are leashed.
