May is National Bike Month, so it's time to get outdoors and enjoy some wonderful South Bend biking trails. Whether you're an experienced cyclist or just looking for exercise, you can try out these local biking trails at your own pace. To get you started, our real estate agents suggest you check out 5 great trails where you can enjoy nature and feel the wind in your hair.
IN-MI River Valley Trail
The Indiana Michigan River Valley Trail offers biking enthusiasts a 17-mile trail from South Bend, Indiana to Niles, Michigan, and a 17-mile return trail from Niles, to Mishawaka, and back to South Bend. This series of trails runs along the Saint Joesph River with scenic views of St. Patrick's County Park, the University of Notre Dame, the Mishawaka Riverwalk, and downtown South Bend. Along the way, you'll be delighted by the calming sounds of running water and chirping birds in the trees, relaxing rest stops with picnic tables, and places to stop with restaurants that serve great food and cool drinks.
LaSalle Trail
The LaSalle Trail begins in Roseland, Indiana, close to the Roseland Town Park, and stretches to the Indiana/Michigan State Line where it connects to the Niles Township trail system. There is a 3.5-mile biking trail made of paved asphalt for a smooth, easy ride. The trail is primarily used for biking, but skaters and walkers are also welcome. The LaSalle Trail is a comfortable path where you can enjoy birdwatching, picnics in grassy side areas, and relaxing in the shade. Since it's part of the larger Indiana Michigan River Valley Trail, it's also easy to connect to other trails for biking adventures.
Pinhook Park
Pinhook Park offers a variety of outdoor activities for families looking for South Bend homes for sale. You can enjoy biking and hiking trails, fishing and fly fishing, swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding, golf, tennis, volleyball, and ice skating during the winter months when temperatures drop. The biking trails in Pinhook Park connect to many other trails that lead to nearby Rum Village Park activities. Pinhook Park and Rum Village Park are two of South Bend's largest parks, so it's easy to participate in your favorite outdoor activities year-round.
Rum Village Park
In Rum Village Park, you can explore more than five miles of trails, including the Rum Village Mountain Bike Trail. On the west side of Gertrude Street, you'll find the entrance to Rum Village Park and the Rum Village Annex. There are trails designed to accommodate the biking skills of beginners, intermediate bikers, and experienced bikers, so you can choose the trail that's best for you. If you're an experienced biking enthusiast, you may want to tackle the Lawless 50-mile race through rugged terrain, where you can win cash and prizes if you win. If the Lawless 50 is a bit too long, you can register to race the 2/3 Lawless (32 miles) or the "Lil Lawless (16 miles) which are also designed for experienced cyclists.
Woodlawn Park
Woodlawn Park is part of the South Bend park system, and it's an urban park located on the banks of South Bend's Saint Joseph River. Because this park is an undeveloped nature preserve, you're likely to spot all types of wildlife along your biking trail, including blue herons, birds, hawks, frogs, turtles, and raccoons which makes it a great place for a biking adventure.
