Indiana Home Winter Warm
No matter how cold it gets outside, our real estate agents are here to help you find the perfect Indiana home for you. Our team works in rain, shine, or even the Indiana snow.

That said, it's important to recognize that Indiana winters can be fierce. Especially if you're new to the state, it's vital to prepare your home well in advance.

Of course, our winters in Indiana aren't the worst. No matter where you're from, you'll soon get the hang of things. All you need to do is get the right information in front of you early on.

Yes, some parts of Indiana can have major winter storms. Most trouble in the cold season isn't caused by heavy snow; however, it comes about as a result of putting off preparations.

Here's how you can get your home ready and keep it comfortable all winter long.

  1. Use Natural Light to Get a Head Start on Heating
The sun remains the most energy efficient heater around. Even in the dead of winter, most days will have some sun. Part the curtains, raise the blinds and open the shutters to let heat in during the day. Then, close windows up tight and cover them to keep the heat from escaping overnight.

  2. Hang Curtains to Conserve Your Interior Heat
The tighter the seal your window hangings and accessories create, the better. Roller shades are a great solution, but heavy, dark-colored drapes can also work well. Remember, leave these open in the day. At night, secure drapes where they meet the wall to make them even more effective.

  3. Add Weather Stripping to Stop Air Leaks
Weather stripping is the solution for stopping heat leakage through doors and windows. As windows get older and warp, they no longer seal tightly when closed. You may even be able to feel cold air seeping through them at night. Weather stripping recreates the original seal.

  4. Cover Up Cold Floors (Especially Wood)
Floors are among the biggest culprits when it comes to heat loss. That's especially true of non-carpeted floors made from hard, un-insulated materials, such as hardwood and concrete. If carpeting isn't an option, thick throw rugs are a cost-effective alternative.

  5. Update Insulation Throughout Your Home
Insulation is essential to optimizing airflow throughout your home. As insulation ages and decays, the gaps created cause winter problems. Heat gets out, cold gets in, and it takes longer for your heater to change the air temperature. New insulation can save money year-round on heating and cooling.

  6. Reach Out to Your Local Electric Company
Utility companies can offer you personalized advice on the best way to save energy throughout your home. In general, when your home is more energy efficient, you'll spend more time at the temperature you find most comfortable and spend less money maintaining that climate.

No matter what the temperature outside, you can come in from the cold with Cressy & Everett. Our real estate experts will give you a warm welcome and provide the advice you need to zero in on your dream home.
