Big City vs. Suburban Living - We'll Help You Decide
The hustle, bustle, and bright lights of the city or the quiet comfort of the suburbs? It's the eternal question for many people when buying a house, and the answer depends on a number of important factors. Your personal preference, financial picture, family status, desired home, and your idea of the ideal community will all factor into the equation. Our real estate agents love helping shoppers decide on the right location for their home, so let's take a closer look at the differences between suburban and big-city living.

Buying a House in the Right Location

There are similarities between suburban and city living in the modern housing market, but also some important differences too. As major population centers grow larger, the suburbs often become more and more integrated with the cities they surround. So it's a good idea to take a close look at any city you're considering, and at what life is like in its surrounding suburbs.

  • Cost of Living – Living in the city will almost always be more expensive than living in the suburbs, but if you love city life then the cost of living may be worth it. Remember that in addition to the higher home values you'll find, your normal, day-to-day expenses are also likely to be higher – whether we're talking food, entertainment, or just running errands. Every city is different, so be sure to compare the cost of living in your target city and its suburbs.

  • Pace of Life – Cities are busy places, with tons of entertainment options, businesses, commuters, and residents. Urban centers are organized, and everything is a bit closer together than in the suburbs. But the suburbs hardly have to be boring. With lower population density, there's more room for backyards, outdoor fun, and natural spaces.

  • Commute – Do you dread traffic, but don't mind mastering your city's public transportation system? Living in the city without using a vehicle could be an appealing option. Would you rather be behind the wheel of your own car, and park it in your garage each night? The suburbs may be just the right fit.

  • Entertainment – The biggest cities offer 24-hour entertainment options – or close to it. You can grab a meal or a drink a diverse collection of restaurants, take in a live performance, shop downtown, or attend the latest special event with a few thousand friends. The suburbs are not likely to offer quite the same volume or variety of urban entertainment options, but many still feature a fun, busy downtown area of their own to go along with more outdoor entertainment options.

  • Personal Preference – Maybe you have a family and want the best possible school district, or you're flying solo and looking for the place where you can enjoy your leisure time. Maybe you want to live in a place with a busy, dynamic job market, or a quiet community that still boasts a great economy. Personal preference – and your plans for the future – play a huge role in selecting the right location when buying a house, so take the time to make a list of exactly what you're looking for in your next community and home.

Whether you're searching for the perfect home in the city, suburbs, or anywhere in between, our team is here to help. Contact Cressy & Everett Real Estate to buy and sell homes in Northern Indiana and Southwestern Michigan.
